Low-risk Prostate Cancer Patients Prefer Surgery Over ‘active Surveillance’

United States – A novel insight has revealed that most men suffering low-risk prostate cancer opt for surgery as a treatment, rather than a non-invasive remedy.

Amongst men who were detected with gradual, non-aggressive prostate cancer, less than 10% were ready to opt for ‘active surveillance' as a treatment option, researchers said. During a study, scientists picked 310 men out of 1,886 patients who suffered low-risk prostate cancer.

Among the 310 men, only 28 opted for 'active surveillance', which meant electronic rectal examinations along with PSA testing and biopsy. The remaining men preferred to undergo surgery which removes the prostate gland.

In the opinion of the researchers, low-risk patients opt for surgery as they are unsure of the methods used to predict the course of cancer. This being the case, patients took the ‘safe than sorry’ route, and preferred to go for surgery rather than non-invasive methods.
