Mothers Opting for C-Sections- Be Warned

Mother Nature may be smiling. Researchers have given their opinion- Nature’s way is far superior to pre-planned caesarian operations, those decided solely upon by the mother, in spite of it being unnecessary.

According to their results published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the risks encountered by a woman who opts for a C-section, in spite of her doctor not advising it, is three times higher than that of a woman undergoing natural delivery.

These risks include severe complications, such as major bleeding, infection and blood clots.

The researchers sourced material from a Canadian database to look at the outcomes of 46,766 women who underwent what doctors deemed to be a low-risk cesarean delivery and nearly 2.3 million women who underwent planned vaginal delivery.

It was seen that the risks of severe complications were 27.3 in 1000 cases while that of normal deliveries were 9 in a 1000 cases.

The C-section has often been seen as an emergency procedure. But now many women, uninformed about the procedure's side effects, mistakenly believe C-section is safer and less painful than natural birth. In some places, doctors suggest C-sections as their profits get raised.

Says Pan Junfeng, a gynecologist in Beijing's Haidian District Hospital of Maternity and Child Care:"C-sections can cause some serious side effects to both mothers and children. Doctors should make the risks known to pregnant women, but only a few choose to do so.

The chances of postoperative infection for cesarean sections is 10 to 20 times higher than for natural labor and the risk of death associated with C-section in pregnant women is five times higher."
