When there is a neighborhood which renders immense potential to walk around, the elders in the community are quite active. This was revealed in a survey conducted by Ethan Berke of Dartmouth Medical School.

The details of this study are ready for publication in the March issue of American Journal of Public Health. This research considered 936 people in the age group of 65-97. Some of the parameters that were analyzed were the topography of the neighborhood, the manner in which commercial and residential localities are interspersed, the proximity of the grocery stores etc.

According to this survey people preferred to walk to places where it is mandatory for them to conduct their daily business like the bank, post office, school or the grocery stores. This survey also highlighted the fact that women were 75% more likely to walk then their male counterparts. On the other hand, men consider this walking as a part of their exercise routine.
