Going Overboard With a Hand Sanitizer

by Medindia Content Team on Feb 1 2007 8:02 PM

The behavior of a 49-year-old prisoner, otherwise calm, had suddenly turned awry. Guards in the prison found him red eyed, cantankerous and sermonizing. Apparently, the prisoner had been consuming from a gallon of hand sanitizer which contained almost 70% alcohol.

The alarm regarding abuse of hand sanitizers was not new, according to the chief of Maryland Poison Control Center, Dr. Suzanne Doyon, who has sought to raise awareness about the abuse of hand sanitizers.

According to Doyen, the hand sanitizer contains many other chemicals in small amounts, along with alcohol, equivalent to levels found in other liquor. "I don't think a lot of people realize these are ethanol containing, or alcohol containing. They are really no different than really concentrated liquor," Doyon said.

Since the hand sanitizers have a better taste and fragrance, there is a possibility that teenagers could also get hooked on to it.
