London- A novel report has suggested that Thursday may not be a good day after all to visit a hospital, as there are chances you might end up waiting longer in the hospital.
The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), United Kingdom, after carefully analyzing the trend for five years have blamed the procedures in the NHS for the undue delays for patient discharge and not medical requirements, as it is thought to be.It was found that an estimated 180,000 people admitted to a hospital on a Thursday ended up staying at the hospital for a day more on an average as compared to the 145,000 who were admitted on a Sunday.
Richard Brooks, associate director of the IPPR, said, "There is real scope for improved efficiency in our hospitals. Patients who are admitted at the end of the week are likely to be kept in hospital significantly longer than those admitted at the beginning of the week. This is not due to medical need, but because many hospitals operate a reduced service at the weekend, creating delays in treatment and discharge."
