An outbreak of Hepatitis-A among students of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is causing concern to health officials in the province.
This is the second outbreak in less than a week and has resulted in the hospitalization of 64 students, according to media reports.Xinhua News Agency reports that the students who have been admitted with hepatitis A were in a stable condition. Fourteen students were discharged on Wednesday.
It is expected that dozens more could be diagnosed with the virus in the coming weeks, because the virus has a one-month incubation period, the report said.
Hepatitis A is a liver disease, which can cause jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea. The virus spreads from the feces of infected people through contaminated food and water or close contact with the carrier.
A preliminary investigation showed that two university canteen workers, who were hepatitis A carriers, might have caused the outbreak. Further investigation is in progress.
The health department has provided vaccinations for over 2,000 students from the university, said Liu Hongning, President of the university.
