A new study has shown that sensible drinking, which can be likened to about two to four drinks a day for men, and one or two drinks for women, may actually be a way to live longer. While moderate drinking is fine, heavy drinking increases the risk of death, Italian researchers have said.
Researchers opined that, "Heavy drinkers should be urged to cut their consumption, but people who already regularly consume low to moderate amounts of alcohol should be encouraged to continue."
The researchers gathered data from more than 30 studies conducted in Europe, United States, Australia, Japan, and China. The studies took into consideration the habits of more than 1 million people, tracking them for a period from six years to twenty six years.
The studies substantiated that heavy drinkers certainly had a high risk of death "Our data show that consumption of little amounts of alcohol leads to a reduction of mortality up to 18 percent," di Castelnuovo said. "But after a certain number of glasses, things radically change," he added.
Researchers have advised that people can drink, but it is safer to drink light. Undoubtedly, it is unsafe to drink and drive.
