Pleas for Funds to Meet Wait Time Guarantees

Provincial health ministers of Canada are now pressing for more funds in order to meet guarantees of wait time.

Wait times refer to the time allotted in days between a prescription for surgery and the actual date of its scheduling. This can vary from 2 days for a CT scan to 86 days for cataract surgery. It is fixed based on urgency of the operation.

Reducing wait times for key surgeries and procedures is a priority of the government and a cornerstone of Canada ‘s overall health strategy.

In the past, some patients have had to wait too long to get the tests or the surgeries they needed.

The ministers say they need guaranteed funding from Ottawa if they are to meet guaranteed wait times.

According to Murphy, New Brunswick Health Minister, “We have to make sure those people who need care, are cared for and that it is provided under the Canada Health Act."

The ministers are also discussing how to regulate privately run health-care services.
