Uncertain Future For 24 More Persons

by Medindia Content Team on Dec 8 2006 1:17 AM

In a horrifying case of blood transfusions probably turning deadly, scientists have reported the chance of 24 more persons who had been given blood transfusions in 2004, being affected with the variant form of Jakob Creutz disease (vCJD).

This was after an analysis of the death of the third person that had received blood transfusions.

Professor John Collinge reporting in the medical journal Lancet said blood transfusions appears to be an efficient route for transmitting the disease.

The almost unstoppable mode of transmission of the disease is alarming doctors all round the world.

Screening of blood is quite impossible as there is no test available to test the presence of the prion or protein carrier of the disease and literally thousands can be at risk

Precautions have been taken like importing blood plasma from the US, as well as the removal of all surgical equipment and blood suspected to be infected with the disease.

It is certainly a killing wait for these 24 persons as symptoms of the brain disease could take up to even 50 years before they show up.
