The first thing that a health professional has to cope with while performing a breast biopsy is the stress of a woman and this can be well controlled by an old technique called hypnosis, which not only controlled the anxiety and pain faced by the patient but is also cost effective and avoids side effects.

Research

At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a study was done on out-patients undergoing large-core needle biopsy (LCNB), the group was randomly divided into three and the first group received standard care, second received empathetic attention and the third group underwent hypnosis.

The Unique Methodology of Hypnosis

The procedure of hypnosis followed was very simple, the women were made to lie down, roll their eyes upward and close their eyes, after which they are advised to breathe deeply and then focus on a sensation of floating and imagine a pleasant setting.

Results of the study

The results of the study show that all the women who underwent the procedure had pain. But the women who had empathetic care and self-hypnotic relaxation had lesser pain; however hypnosis group involved in the shortest duration for the procedure and lowest cost. The doctors also felt they could do their job better because their patient is not anxious.
