Gays in China Urged to Use Condoms Regularly

The usage of condoms among the gay population will be promoted significantly in China, from next year. A five-year project is scheduled to be flagged off in the coming year. The program aims to contain the increase in number of HIV infections across the nation.

The chief focus of the program will be on the homosexual section of the society. They aim to ensure that at least 70% of all gays use condoms at the time of sexual contact. At present, surveys have shown that only 20% of homosexuals actually use condoms during a sexual contact, in Beijing. About 7.3% of infection with HIV is contributed because of unsafe sex practiced among the homosexual community. Most of the other cases are an offshoot of unsafe sex among heterosexual partners and drug abuse.

The ministry of Health announced that the 39,644 people reported to be HIV positive in the last ten months alone. About 650,000 people were declared HIV positive at the end of last year. They need collaboration between government departments and grassroots organizations,
