Naseem's Heart Put In Its Place

by Medindia Content Team on Nov 23 2006 9:00 PM

Naseems’ mother knew something was wrong with her baby in the womb. Already having borne two children, she knew something was amiss as she felt the baby hiccupping constantly in her womb.

An ultrasound scanning revealed the defect, and baby Naseem delivered by Caesarean section, went in for a surgery on the same day, Wednesday. Both operations were successful. Only a layer of fabric called Gore-Tex and a layer of his own skin now covers Naseem's heart. Soon, the doctors plan to fit in a plastic chest cover to protect the heart. After his condition improves, doctors will perform another surgery. This involves creating an artificial casing, using tissue taken from Naseems ribs.

'I am very thankful that I found the doctors that I found, and I thank God every day,' said his mother at a news conference.

Doctors are happy that the newborn's heart was functioning properly. If all goes well, Naseem will go home in December.
