Double Knee replacement for a Kenyan in Chennai

by VR Sreeraman on Nov 5 2006 5:40 PM

Orthopaedic surgery in Chennai attracted a visitor from the Safari country of Kenya. A 68 year old grandfather with advanced osteoarthritis of both knees underwent bilateral knee replacements here in a city hospital.

DR.A.K.Venkatachalam, a renowned Orthopedic surgeon remarked that this was the first time that a Kenyan citizen had visited this Chennai hospital for bilateral knee replacements. His son, a UK based accountant located the Doctor after an internet search and verified his credentials after talking to a few of his former patients in the UK. Although it was the holy month of Ramdan, the father did'nt mind travelling abroad to have his knee surgery. The old man had neglected and severe osteo arthritis with bent knees and was unable to walk more than ten yards, tiring easily. Although there were good hospitals in Nairobi, the old man did'nt trust the Doctors in his homeland. He did'nt want to travel to South Africa, Thailand, or the middle east. He underwent sequential bilateral knee replacements a week apart. After a fortnight's stay the father and son returned to Kenya a week ago.
