Levels of Thyroid Hormone Forecasts Life Span

by Medindia Content Team on Oct 12 2006 7:10 PM

A novel study on rodents has found a relationship between thyroid levels and life-span, suggesting that higher the metabolic rate, shorter is the life-span. Thyroid hormone in the body regulates the metabolic rate.

The study engaged in a comparative study of the levels of thyroid hormones in rodents that belonged to different groups and age groups as well. The study measured the thyroid levels for each animal. The finding revealed, there was a marked variation among all the groups with a shorter life span, displaying higher thyroid levels.

Researchers summed up with the finding that:” These hormone concentration differences correlate with maximum species lifespan and suggest an important regulatory role of thyroid hormone in longevity. Thyroid hormones are key regulators of metabolism and have been widely implicated to influence longevity. Mice strains that exhibit extended longevity tend to have lower thyroid hormone concentrations than shorter living strains. Significant declines in thyroid hormone correlate well with enhanced maximum lifespan."
