The battle against polio is far from over in Bihar with the detection of new cases in those districts that are not covered in the June-July immunisation drive this year.
Eight districts of Magadh and Patna divisions were not covered under the drive. Two new polio cases were detected in Jehanand, while one each came up in Arwal and Nawada districts. Patna district has also four new cases of polio, an official said.
Keeping the detection of the new cases in view, the central government has directed the state to launch special immunisation drive from Oct 10 to 14 in all those districts, which were not covered in June-July.
Bihar has the second highest number of cases in the country after Uttar Pradesh. Twenty cases of polio have been reported till early August, as against 10 in 2005.
Despite millions of rupees being spent on immunisation drive, new cases are reported every year in the state. Till date over 40 pulse polio immunisation rounds were conducted in Bihar since December 1995.
