Indian President Urges Cardiologists to Focus on Preventive Care

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Tuesday urged medical practitioners, particularly cardiologists, to focus more on preventive care and report negative results along with positive outcomes of treatment to enable medical practitioners to take well informed decisions.

"Every industry spends significant amount for preventing accidents and building reliability. Similarly, the medical and healthcare institutions should also spend significant amount on research for preventing accidents and in building reliability in medical devices and treatment," Kalam told the second Asian Interventional Cardiovascular Therapeutics Conference here.

The president urged the cardiologists' forum to set up a website where the doctors could share their experiences when things go wrong after an intervention surgery.

The four-day forum meet of cardiologists from around the world has been co-organised by India's Max Heart and Vascular Institute, US-based Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) and the Singapore-based Asian Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology (APSIC).

Given the degradation of environment in cities and changing lifestyles that make people prone to heart ailments, Kalam said: "There is a need for conducting enhanced research to prevent disease and search for curative solutions in addition to allocations for carrying out research on interventions. Medicine today needs a paradigm shift."

Urging the cardiologists to follow the examples of those leading ophthalmologists who provide free treatment to large number of poor patients, Kalam voiced the view that cardiac doctors and physicians should also become teachers to the family and friends of patients to create better awareness.
