A protein that is present in the saliva and urine triggers off allergic reactions to cats. These special cats were bred by deleting this protein. California-based biotech firm Allerca conducted tests on thousands of cats before identifying the perfect breed.
"This is a natural gene divergence within the cat DNA - one out of 50,000 cats will have this divergence. So naturally divergent cats were found and then bred so there is really no modification of the gene," said company spokesman Steve May.
The cost of these cats is £2,000 ($3,950) each with an additional £500 ($1,000) as shipping fee.
