Targeted Anesthesia Can Minimize Pain During Prostate Biopsy

According to the latest study by the Mayo clinic, injecting an anesthetic at certain points can reduce the pain during prostate biopsy.

The new study that is being presented today at the annual meeting of the North Central Section of the American Urological Association, in San Diego, had found that about 16% of patients encounter a moderate or higher level of pain during their biopsy. It was explained that the biopsies are commonly performed on men who have had abnormal digital rectal exams or elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests, both of which seek prostate cancer.

The researchers explained that for this study they had engaged 243 men who were on schedule for undertaking a prostate biopsy. They were assigned to receive an anesthetic for the relief of pain at one among the three locations.

Richard Ashley, Mayo Clinic urology resident and lead study investigator, said, “Prostate biopsy evokes significant anxiety for some men due to anticipated pain associated with the procedure.” He also added, “Patients should request that anesthetic be used at the time of a biopsy, and pain control should be the standard of care in a urologist's office.”
