Measures To Prevent Bird Flu From Migratory Birds Stepped Up

by Dr. Saravanan K on Sep 5 2006 5:16 PM

Measures to control bird flu has been stepped up by Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives as migratory birds are expected to arrive in the country's major swamps from next month.

As the annual migratory period begins next month, authorities have been instructed to implement tough bird flu control measures to ward off bird flu virus spreading from the migratory birds.

Vice Minister Charal Trinvuthipong said that livestock officials have been instructed by National Bird Flu Control Centre to spray disinfectant in major swamps in three central provinces of Pathum Thani, Suphan Buri, and Nakhon Sawan to ward off the bird flu virus.

Dr. Charal said that forestry officials would be asked to closely monitor the migratory birds to check for the virus and to collect bird carcasses for H5N1 virus tests. He said the country was better prepared for the situation, as they know when the migratory birds arrive, and also added that besides measures to prevent bird flu from migratory birds, nationwide checks for bird flu would also be conducted by officials this month.

Livestock Development Department Chief, Yukol Limlamthong, said that in order to strengthen the bird flu prevention measures, agricultural volunteers have also been deployed to help public health volunteers to monitor bird flu outbreaks.

Dr. Charal said awareness campaigns against bird flu would be carried out among poultry farmers to ensure that they are informed about the disease.
