Best ways to split a pill

by Medindia Content Team on Jul 5 2002 5:16 PM

Researchers offer important tips regarding splitting a pill and ways of taking care your medication. Sometimes half a pill does the job better than a whole one. one might be neglecting off a medication, or be given a double dose of a medicine that's expensive. Either way, you may need to split a pill into two or more doses.

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic offer you some advice on how to go about pill splitting. First, you need to check if your pill is amenable to splitting at all. If it's an extended release or coated formulation, splitting it may reduce its effectiveness or may even be hazardous.

Next look at the pill shape and design. Some are already scored for easy splitting and should present you with no problem. But other pills are difficult to split and for these you need the right tool - a dedicated pill splitter, in fact, available from the drugstore. Don't use a regular knife for these. And, again, check with the pharmacist that the active ingredient is evenly distributed throughout the pill - otherwise you might be wasting your time.
