A team of medical specialists has decided to set up a laboratory on the slopes of Mount Everest in order to conduct fitness-related experiments. The 23-day-long-expedition will feature 208 volunteers and is expected to kick-off in March 2007.

Dr Mike Grocott, of University College London's Institute of Human Health and Performance is leading the team called as the Xtreme Everest team. He said that the findings could be used to treat people needing critical care.

"By observing healthy individuals at high altitude where oxygen is scarce, we can learn about physiological changes that can improve critical care at the hospital bedside because low oxygen levels are an almost universal problem in critical care," he said.

The BBC reports that at least 10 volunteers will attempt to scale the peak. Volunteers are top pay 2,395 pounds to take part in the research.
