Police here Wednesday arrested a fake doctor and his wife for allegedly conducting large-scale illegal abortions at their hospital in a town near here.

Pritam Singh Amarjit Kaur had been carrying out the operations at the Sahib Hospital at Patran town for couples wanting to get rid of female foetuses.

Their illegal activities came to light when a woman working as a medical attendant with them tipped off police, district police chief Pramod Bhan said.

Police, along with district health authorities, raided the premises and pulled out scores of foetuses from the sewerage tank in the backyard of the hospital.

Police sealed the premises of a nearby ultrasound test clinic after it was pointed out that the sex of the unborn children was being detected there in violation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) Act.

Punjab has one of the worst sex ratios in the country at around 800 females per 1,000 males.
