The sailor became sick in early June and was initially diagnosed as having pneumonia by ship's medical staff, but was later readmitted to the San Diego Naval Medical Center after his symptoms recurred and there he was diagnosed as having tuberculosis. The sailor has not been identified because of medical privacy laws.
Capt. Frank Chapman, surgeon, has said that all Sailors and civilians who shared sleeping quarters with the infected sailor are being tested for exposure to the contagious disease, and a decision on whether any additional testing is required will be taken based on the results of the tests.
The sailor who was initially placed in the isolation ward at San Diego Naval Medical Center has since returned to his off-base apartment, but will remain in an informal isolation until his tests return completely negative.
