Codex role likely to expand

Durham: Hardly any Food is sourced locally and this is where the Codex Alimentarius Commission’s role is crucial. If food were to be sourced locally, it would be an uphill task to maintain standards in taste and safety.

Codex, deals with food legislation among 173 states in addition to the European community. This is indeed a combined worthy effort by the World Trade Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

They are slated to discuss further improvements on food protection - the meeting is to take place soon. The many topics for discussion will be the permissible levels of lead in fish, toxins in nuts, cadmium content in rice etc. But what will perhaps lead the discussion will be the matter of antibiotics in the food given to animals. If it is absolutely needed, an establishment to exclusively take care of this matter will be instituted.
