Donation Of Blood, Organs, Act Of Great Humanity: Shekhawat

Inaugurating the blood bank of Indian Red Cross Society, Bihar chapter here, the Vice President asked the government and people to work in tandem for the noble cause adding that voluntary donors of blood and organs must be encouraged to save precious lives, especially that of the poor.

Recalling the contribution of late Sunil Dutt, cine star- turned-politician, Shekhawat said a cheque which Dutt had signed to save the life of a patient, a day before he was declared dead, had set an example of great humanity.

"Such information should be spread to help people imbibe the culture of donation to save the lives of people," he said.

Shekhawat recalled how lives of three or four serious patients were saved by doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) when family members of a critically injured victim of a road accident had agreed to donate his kidneys, liver and heart.

He lauded BJP Rajya Sabha member and cine star Shatrughan Sinha and his MP colleague Bashishtha Narain Singh for contributing lakhs of rupees to Indian Red Cross Society (Bihar chapter) for the blood bank.

The Vice President also assured full support to the office bearers of Indian Red Cross Society in carrying forward the work for expansion of the blood bank programme.

Governor R S Govai, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, State Health Minister Chandramohan Rai, besides Rajya Sabha members Shatrughan Sinha, Digvijay Singh and Bashishtha Narain Singh also attended the function.
