According to a research done by Dr Allan Pantuck it was found that pomegranate juice has the ability to fight prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men in the UK. About 30,000 men in Britain are diagnosed each year and about 10,000 die from the disease. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is an important biomarker which shows the presence of prostate cancer. But study shows that consumption of a glass of pomegranate juice daily by 50 men who were treated for prostate cancer stabilized blood levels of PSA.

If PSA levels were to double it meant that the cancer is returning and on an average the time taken for prostate cancer patients is about 15 months. The study results were published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research. It was said that drinking 225ml of pomegranate juice daily increased the time by 54 months. Consumption of pomegranate juice prevents or delays the requirement of the patient to go in for other therapies, such as hormone treatment.

The researcher said that the basic mechanism behind this response is not known and further research is needed to understand it completely. He also said that the present treatment will not offer a cure, but is able to change the way prostate cancer grows. It was surprising to find that PSA levels rose in the men reduced by 35 % after they started drinking pomegranate juice. The cell proliferation rate in these patients decreased by 12 %. On the whole pomegranate juice has other good qualities such as anti-inflammatory effects and high levels of antioxidants. Dr Hiley added that further research would give us an idea about the uses and the wider applications of pomegranate juice.
