Pomegranates In Snack-Sized Bars

by Medindia Content Team on Jun 29 2006 9:56 AM

Pomegranates are one of the most sought after fruits in the world. Besides being juicy to eat these fruits have many health benefits since they are loaded with fiber, vitamin C and anthocyanins. These are available naturally and hence utilized better by the body.

Pomegranates are seasonal fruits, but a process invented by scientists at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) makes this fruit available as a snack-size, fat-free bar. The bar contains just 100 calories and is rich in all the natural compounds.

Food technologist and research leader Tara H. McHugh of the ARS Western Regional Research Center in Albany is the co-inventor of this technology that has made "Wonderful Pomegranate FruitFast" bars available without adding any preservatives.

Montmorency CherryFlex FruitFast Bar and Wild Blueberry IQ FruitFast bars are the other bars manufactured by Flavonoid Sciences of Eastport. The process was invented as a part of an effort to get kids and teenagers to follow the recommended five to nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables.
