South-east Victoria Sale Hospital's two pediatricians, Jo McCubbin and Peter Goss have given their resignations with three months notice with three months notice . However a full time replacement is not expected for at least six months.

This has led to concerns among obstetricians at Sale. Sale obstetrician Dr Refaat Guirguis has said that obstetricians would not be able to deliver premature babies without pediatric support.

Dr Guirguis voiced his regrets about Dr Goss's resignation and hoped that the hospital could convince Dr McCubbin at least to stay on.

"I hope that the new pediatrician would come sooner than the six months, maybe in three months, in which case the gap that exists in the service will be minimized," he said.

"But in the meantime that will be a situation that's very unfortunate and we'll have to deal with it as it comes."

At present a South African-trained doctor has formally accepted a position as a specialist pediatrician at the Sale Hospital. , If approved by the Royal Australian College of Physicians, Dr Austen Erasmus will start work at Sale in six months
