After the death of Pat Joe Walsh at Monaghan General Hospital last year consultants have been appointed to examine the health care system in the region.
The existing services of the five hospitals have been declared to be unsustainable and unsafe.
One of the important recommendations of the report, is the development of a new regional hospital with up to 750 beds to be built by 2015.
Other recommendations are development of services, especially primary care facilities and the gradual transfer of major medical and surgical services from the smaller hospitals to the new regional center.
