Fourth international urogynaecology conference on Jun 16

Chennai, June 10. Evolution of new methods of treatment in Urogynaecology will be the focus area at the fourth International conference and live workshop on Urogynaecology and Reconstructive pelvic surgery, that begins here on June 16.

A live televised demonstration of a pelvic surgery, being conducted at Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital (KGH), will be held on the occasion.

Briefing reporters about the three-day conference, Dr N Rajamaheshwari, Head of Department of Urogynaecology, KGH, said that a prevalence survey conducted by the Department of Female Urology and Urogynaecology of KGH, indicated that over 63 per cent of women suffered from some kind of urinary incontinence.

The survey conducted on a sample populace of 1,062 women, who visited the hospital, also showed that around 58 per cent suffer from the same disorder induced due to stress. The number could have drastically increased over the past nine years, she added.

The urogynaecology dept of the KGH, performs 350-500 surgeries per year, on women with pelvic organ prolapse, a complication which arises due to childbirth, old age or hormonal disorders, she said.

The conference, which will be attended by gynaecologists, urologists and colorectal surgeons from around the world, will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss.
