A recent study that is available in the British Medical Journal has suggested that indulging in an alcoholic drink every day does have benefits on the heart , but these benefits seem to favor men more.

The finding was a result of research conducted on 50,000 Danish men and women in the age bracket of 50 to 65, which showed different results for women. Although the study did show that women who took alcohol at least one day a week had benefits on heart health, compared to women who totally avoided alcohol.

The crux of the finding rested on the fact that there was no significant difference observed in the women with frequency of alcohol consumption, the reduction in risk being almost at the same level, whether they drank just on one day or on all seven days.

In contrast, alcohol seemed to be partial to men, for those who drank every day portrayed a 41% reduced risk compared with those who drank on only one day, showed a 7% reduced risk.

The researchers, from the Centre for Alcohol Research in Denmark, said: "Among women, alcohol intake may be the primary determinant of the inverse association between drinking alcohol and risk of coronary heart disease whereas among men, drinking frequency, not alcohol intake, seems more important."

All the participants were keenly observed for six years where drinking habits, smoking, age and diet were monitored.
