Talks between the Central government and striking medicos to end the agitation over the proposal to introduce reservation for Other Backward Castes in educational institutes failed to reach any conclusion on Monday.
Badly disappointed with the government's decision to implement the 27% reservation for OBCs in higher education, the striking doctors and medical students announced that they would plan to make their agitation 'more aggressive and intense and spread it to every part of the country. They were all highly disappointed with the Prime Minister who had assured them on 22nd May, that while implementing the policy, interest of all communities would be taken into consideration.

Dr Anirudh Lochan, a spokesman for 'Youth for Equality', a group that is leading the agitation said that the government has not considered their demands and so they have decided to make the agitation more aggressive and intense, spreading it to all parts of the country. He further stated that the government had assured them during negotiation that there will be an increase in the number of seats and institutions to implement the OBC reservation in a phased manner but unfortunately he said that even that had not been considered in the government's decision.
Blaming the government for having lost the incentive to resolve the contentious issue in an amicable way he said that the government has lost that opportunity and it will be responsible for the consequences. Comparing their agitation till now with a smouldering matchstick, he warned that the entire country would now burn and the government would be directly responsible.
Turning down Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's appeal to call off their strike, the protesting students and senior resident doctors remained defiant to notices to vacate the hostels, saying they would continue with their agitation till their demands were met. Junior doctors of medical colleges and hospitals also continued their strike that has paralysed health services in the capital.
The striking doctors and students have been demanding a complete rollback on the proposal of 27% for OBC in higher educational institutions by the government besides setting up of a non-political judicial committee to review the existing reservation policy.
The doctors and medical students of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Safdarjang, Guru Tegh Bahadur, Maulana Azad and the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narain Hospitals are on strike. With the resident and Junior doctors of Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Ram Manohar Lohia, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Ihbas hospitals had also joined the stir.
