Despite the withdrawal of strike by junior doctors the agitation launched by pro-quota medical students continued to hit health services in Bihar.
The emergency ward at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) remained badly hit with no new patient being admitted with the pro-quota medicos continuing their dharna on Monday. The government seemed to be still at loss for a solution for the deadlock. The chief minister has held two rounds of talks with the medicos and a probe into the police lathicharge on them is currently underway.The health department seems to have washed its hands of the crisis even as nearly all the government medical college hospitals in the state were hit by the stir. The health minister Chandra Mohan Rai remarked that it appears that the agitationists are divided. The minister explained that the root cause of the stir would be because of a decision taken by the Union government. He, however, ruled out any action against the agitating students, saying that they will negotiate with them.
Meanwhile there are reports there were reports that PMCH superintendent A K Pandey had withdrawn his resignation, but he remained elusive and sources claim that his efforts to hold talks with the agitating students proved futile.
Certain of the agitating medicos blamed the government for continuation of the stir. An agitating medico stated on Sunday that the impression that was created about them ending the strike unconditionally was not true. As of now the students seem to have shifted their demands for the suspension of the DSP who had reportedly ordered for the lathicharge on the students.
Students allege that the police beat them in operation theatres, and that even women students were not spared their brutality. The agitating students continued their dharna at the PMCH on Monday, appealing to their teachers to join them too.
Meanwhile, in a relief to a large number of patients, the emergency services were restored in Bhagalpur Medical College Hospital as the students withdrew their strike, emergency services in Darbhanga Medical College Hospital was restored on Sunday itself. The agitating pro-reservation medicos of S K Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) have spared the hospital from the brunt of their strike but they have locked the college office on Monday in protest against lathicharge on medical students in Patna on Friday, paralysing all teaching works in the collages.
