Very Low Salt Intake Increases Risk of Death from Heart Disease and Stroke
Salt intake has always been associated with high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases but a new study published in the journal Diabetes Care reveals that too low salt intake could increase the risk of death due to heart disease and stroke.
Researchers led by Professor George Jerums and Dr Elif Ekinci analyzed the salt intake of more than 600 elderly type II diabetes patients who visited his clinic at Heidelberg's Austin Health.

The researchers found that those who had a higher intake of salt were less likely to die due to heart disease and stroke with every 2.3 grams of sodium decreasing the risk of death by 28 percent.

“If the person's blood pressure isn't controlled, it's an opportunity to say, 'Your salt intake is 200 [millimoles]. If you could halve it, that would help your blood pressure control'. That's as far as we go. We don't say, 'But on the other hand, we don't really know what we're doing'”, Professor Jerums said.
