Using Bus for Commute is Less Stressful

While it is often assumed that those who travel on buses are more stressed compared to those who have their own vehicles, a new study by the man who coined the phrase "road rage" suggests that the reverse is true.

Dr David Lewis from University of Sussex said that those who often used buses for their journeys suffered a third less stress than those making the same trip driving. He added the major reason for the difference was heavy traffic which makes the brain work harder and traffic congestion.

Dr Lewis analyzed the heart rate and Electro-Dermal Response (EDR) of 30 commuters who travelled the same journey both on the bus and in their cars and found that when driving their own vehicles, the EDR levels of the commuters changed by 33 percent.

He went on to say that the stress could pose a long term health issue for the commuters. "This type of stress can have long-term physiological and emotional implications. Boarding a bus can produce significant long-term benefits", he said.
