USDA Awards Two Grants To Kansas State Department Of Education
The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has been awarded two grants totaling nearly $500,000 by the United State Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service.
The grants are to support the work of school nutrition professionals in preparing healthy meals for students.

The first grant in the amount of $349,964 is to expand the training programs in Kansas that incorporate and implement the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans in meals served under the National School Lunch program (NSLP) and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

The grant will be used to provide training and technical assistance for child nutrition food service professionals to prepare and serve nutritious meals that appeal to children; provide nutrition education for children, teachers, parents and other caregivers; and build school and community support for creating healthy school environments that are conducive to healthy eating and physical activity.

The second grant in the amount of $149,335 is to support Kansas’ implementation of new professional standards developed by USDA that include minimum hiring standards for the selection of State directors and local school nutrition program directors and continuing education/training requirements for all school nutrition program employees (79 FR 6488).

Cheryl Johnson, KSDE director of Child Nutrition and Wellness, said, “Too many children and older adults are not receiving the nutrition they need to live healthy lives. Grants like these from the USDA ensure we are able to provide the very best training and supports for our school nutrition professionals and care providers throughout the state.”
