University of Texas Opens Medtech Makerspace for Healthcare Professionals

The first makerspace for health care providers was launched at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Supported in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the MakerHealth Space in John Sealy Hospital will empower nurses and other medical staff to bring their ideas for improving health care to life.

MedTech Innovator Competition to be Held in San Diego from October 5 to 7
MedTech Innovator is a venture competition designed to identify and support innovative early-stage medical device companies.

The facility has a bunch of products used in hospitals, tons parts that can be used to create things, and tools including 3D printers. Once a new device is created, it will go through an institutional review board before it gets tested.

"Health making takes the art of nursing to the next level,” said Jose Gomez-Marquez, co-founder of MakerNurse. “With the MakerHealth Space, nurses can take that epiphany that they’ve had at the bedside for how to improve the patient experience, and actually make it into something they can hold in their hand.”
