Union Health Ministry Urges AIIMS on Precise Identification of Dengue Virus Subtype
AIIMS is in the process of identifying the subtype of dengue virus that has affected 831 people in Delhi. The Union Health Ministry has said that it is expecting to know the precise identity of the dengue virus subtype within a week.
Dengue is caused by four serotypes. Type I and III cause mild dengue fever whereas type II and IV are found to be deadly. They cause high fever, bleeding and a drop in platelet count.

"All four serotypes (1, 2, 3 and 4) of dengue were isolated from time to time in various states. The report of the serotypes circulating in Delhi is expected within a week," said B P Sharma, Union health secretary.

In Delhi, till August 29, at least 831 persons were diagnosed with dengue. Two dengue deaths have been reported. The ministry has written a letter to the urban development department urging it to allow access to several unoccupied buildings and rooftops to check breeding.
