The proposal to form societies for each of the six AIIMS like institutions which are being set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) was approved by the Union Cabinet today. These societies will be functional till the AIIMS-like institutions are brought under an Act of Parliament.
According to an official release, creating legal entities in the form of societies for these institutions will facilitate greater autonomy and faster execution of projects and will expedite the release of government funds.
Each of these institutions will be registered under a society and will have two tier organisations and management structure.
The governing council under the chairmanship of Health Minister will be the apex body to decide on policy matters. There will be a board of governors with Secretary (Health) as the chairperson and persons with knowledge in the field of science and medicine will be nominated by the governing council.
The Cabinet had approved the PMSSY in 2006 with the objective of correcting regional imbalances for affordable and reliable health care services as well as to increase facilities for quality medical education in the country.
The institutions are being set up in Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur and Rishikesh at an estimated cost of Rs 840 crore per institution.
