Under-18’s Banned from Using Sunbeds

According to a new legislation, under-18s in England and Wales are banned from using sunbeds in hotels, tanning salons and gym. This will reduce the incidence of skin cancer among children and teenagers. People who fail to comply with the new Sunbed regulation Act 2010 could be fined up to 20,000 pounds. This new legislation comes following the diagnosis of skin cancer every day in UK among people below 35-years of age.

Local authorities will keep a check on businesses by giving surprise visits to ensure that they are complying with the law. Common people can also report concerns if they come across any business flouting the norms.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) said the ban did not go far enough and called for further measures similar to those set to be introduced in Wales. After 31^st October the use of sunbeds will supervised and adults who wish to use sunbed will be provided with protective eyewear. Under-18s will be prohibited from hiring or buying sunbeds.
