UK Switches to Gardasil for Protection Against Cervical Cancer
The Department of Health, UK has decided to vaccinate teenage girls (aged 12-13 years) against sexual diseases with Gardasil instead of the currently used Cervarix jab. Gardasil is made by Sanofi Pasteur MSD. 80-million doses of this vaccine have been distributed worldwide.
Cervarix manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, protects against two strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV type 16 and 18) which cause cervical cancer. Cervarix will now be replaced by quadrivalent Gardasil in the national vaccination program. This vaccine protects against further two strains and prevents up to 90% of genital warts.

This change will come into effect from September next year.
