The UCLA Health System is settling a case with U.S regulators pertaining to the illegal access of celebrity medical records by hospital employees.
They have coughed up $865,500 to bring a closure to the case. Many celebrity records were illegally accessed by employees of the hospital from 2005 to 2009 repeatedly and for no concrete reason. Some of the celebrities targeted were Farrah Fawcett, Britney spears, and Maria Shriver.
Breach of patient privacy is a serious matter and lawmakers have begun imposing higher fines on hospitals that are guilty of such acts.
