Two in Five Americans Read Bible Online in 2012

The number of Americans who read the Bible online has seen a rise last year with a new survey revealing that two in five Americans used the internet to read the holy book in 2012.

According to a survey conducted by the American Bible Society, Americans are increasingly looking to digital devices to read the Bible as 29 percent of Americans searched for Bible verses on smartphones, while 17 percent read the Bible on a Kindle or an iPad.

The Society said that the data indicates a continual shift to digital content and the number of Bible readers using Internet as the medium has increased each year, Fox News reports.

The survey found that the most read and searched version of the Bible was the King James Version but found a decrease in the holy book's ownership as only 88 percent of American households owned a hard copy of the book as compared to 92 percent in 1993.

The report said that YouVersion's Bible app recently surpassed 100 million downloads in the App Store, placing it on equal grounds with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in terms of users.
