Two Campaigns Demand Strict Regulations to Stop Misleading Cosmetics Ads in India
Advertisements on cosmetics and skincare products are often misleading and two campaigns have been launched to demand strict regulations and laws to stop such promotions.
Recently, the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) have launched two campaigns, Swachh Twacha and Chalein Gaon Ki Aur, to create awareness among general public about the prevalent social stigma associated with various skin diseases like vitiligo, leprosy by providing scientific information, education and support.

According to skin care experts, millions of salons and spas carrying out dermatological procedures, laser procedures and skin disease-related malpractice have emerged without a qualified dermatologist.

Dr. Venkatraman Mysore, IADVL president said, “Chalein Gaon Ki Aur is an initiative to conduct skin health camps in villages, schools and rural areas where people do not have access to good dermatologists. People should not get influenced by advertisements of skincare products shown on TV.”

Dr. Rohit Batra, Dermatologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and IADVL joint secretary said, “As part of social commitment, the association’s main concern is to put an end to the unethical and misleading advertisements on cosmetic products like anti-ageing creams, face washes and fairness creams. IADVL aims at perusing the issue with the concerned authorities to put in place strict regulatory mechanisms and implement those to stop these unethical marketing propaganda”.

The IADVL demanded enforcement of certain laws to stop the uncontrollable sales of steroid creams/ointments from pharmaceutical stores without any doctor’s prescription.
