by VR Sreeraman on Sep 11 2008 11:40 AM

At least 20 people have died of cholera and hundreds more are suspected of suffering from the disease in the central Iraqi province of Babel, a local official said on Wednesday.

"In the past three days, 20 people have died from cholera in several regions of Babel," provincial council member Mohammed al-Jafari told AFP.

He said the victims included seven children and two women.

"The region's hospitals have received hundreds of cases showing symptoms of cholera," Jafari added.

On Monday, authorities in Babel went on alert after the first four deaths were reported.

The southern Shiite province of Maysan has also reported cases of cholera, but so far there have been no deaths, local officials said.
