Treatment for Malnutrition Helps to Conceive
A treatment used to deal with malnutrition has helped a couple in Britain to have healthy twins after going through the pain of three miscarriages in three years.
Stacy Bodle had polycystic ovaries which were discovered after she miscarried in 2007 and doctors recommended IVF treatment.

Nevertheless, Stacy and her husband James had to go through further pain through two more miscarriages including the loss of twins. Suspicion of an undetected medical condition led to tests that revealed the presence of too many natural killer cells which in supporting the body’s immune system can turn on a developing embryo and kill it.

Doctors at the CARE fertility clinic at Sheffield decided to try a treatment of intralipids, a mixture of natural fats made of egg yolks and soya oil. Stacy received this treatment in three doses through drips. And now, she and her husband feel their family is complete with their twins Harry James and Libby Rose.

Dr Adel Shaker, medical director at CARE, says: “It’s basically just a lot of calories, but research suggests that it can suppress the natural killer cells. We are surmising that it removes the dangerous signals from the immune system and can suppress the natural killer cells. I believe Stacy is the first person in the region to have this treatment.”
