According to a study children who
consume a healthy diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables and salad have a
higher IQ. They confirmed that junk food tends to lower a child's IQ. Scientists
from the University of Bristol studied about 4000 kids and found that children under
the age of 4years who ate a diet of processed food, fat and sugar had lower
brain power at 8.5years. This damage was irreversible as diet at 4 and 7years
had no effect on the IQ scores. During the study parents were asked to
complete questionnaires giving details about the types and frequency of the
food and drink their children ate when they were 3, 4, 7 and 8.5years old.
Scientists stressed the importance of healthy diet in early life as the brain grows fastest during the first 3years of life. Lead of the study, Dr Kate Northstone said, "Good food in this period may encourage optimal brain growth."
Thus, eating habits among toddlers during the initial years help shape their brain performance as they get older.
