The Last South Korean Patient of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Passes Away
The last South Korean patient of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) passed away on November 25, 2015, the health ministry has said. He had struggled against the virus for six-months, the authority added.
The 35-year-old was contracted the viral disease on June 8, 2015. He also had the malignant lymphoma. Due to the treatment with anti-cancer drugs, the patient's immunity was sharply compromised.

According to media reports, the patient was tested negative for the MERS corona virus on Nov. 1. But he was confirmed positive for the virus 10 days later before dying of complications on Wednesday.

His struggle with the MERS was recorded as the longest struggle with the virus in the world - approximately 172 days.

The first MERS patient was found in South Korea on May 20. A total of 186 individuals were infected by the viral disease. Among them, as many as 38 patients died, raising the fatality rate to 20.4%.

Outside the Middle East, South Korea is considered as the most MERS-infectious country. South Korea declared the ‘actual’ end of the MERS outbreak in late July.

The official end of the MERS outbreak is expected to be declared by the World Health Organization on December. 23.
