Teen Girls Opt for Breast Enlargement to Bolster Confidence and Self-esteem

by Savitha C Muppala on May 3 2008 4:16 PM

Teens are perhaps the first to sport new trends to keep abreast with the times.

The latest trend among teen girls shows them embracing cosmetic surgery of the breast in a bid to enhance their looks. Many of them have gone under the knife for breast implants which they confess would serve a double purpose – enhance their sex appeal as well as perk up lost self esteem.

The trend has witnessed a three fold increase among girls below 18 who underwent breast implants between 2002 and 2003. According to data from The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2002, 3,872 teens had undergone breast enlargement surgery; in 2003, the figure had risen to 11,326.

This has challenged the earlier notion about not finding too many teen patrons for such surgeries. Many teens when questioned said breast enlargement offered an easy solution to their problems of low self esteem. This method is catching up as a quick remedy to overcome self consciousness and depression, they said.

Upon closer look, such teens are members of a growing number of groups in social networking sites that offer a platform to discuss cosmetic surgery and its options, seek support and advice and even put up pictures if desired.
