Teen Alcohol Use Linked to Boredom

by Rajashri on Aug 5 2009 11:51 PM

A survey by The charity Drinkaware has found that many British teens turn to alcohol to overcome boredom. 1,071 teens were polled in the survey and some 29% said they had taken to alcohol after being bored at some point of their lives.

Drinkaware said this threatened to become a major problem in the society. Another separate survey of 1,000 teachers, nurses, doctors, police and public health consultants said most favored tougher alcohol laws.

"It is really important that 16 and 17 year olds don't unintentionally put themselves at risk when they drink alcohol," said Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware. "Drinking can increase the chances of either being the victim or a perpetrator of a crime and having unprotected sex leading to sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies."

Don Shenker, chief executive of the charity Alcohol Concern said alcohol had become an entertainment for young people.
